The Saharan jacket or safari jacket was created for British Commonwealth servicemen who travelled to desert landscapes where they had to remain unnoticed. They moved through terrain of dunes, palm trees, deserts and sandstorms, an environment in which Commonwealth troops needed garments that suited their needs, that were light and practical in equal measure. The sahariana started out as a cream-coloured, cotton-only jacket. It was soon joined by khaki green for forays into the jungle and a wide range of browns. Another hallmark of the sahariana from its origins was the pockets. The pattern calls for at least four, two on the chest and two on the bottom, with flap and button. The original pattern dictated that the pockets should be gusset pockets and very wide. Like all military jackets, the sahariana is noted for its versatility.
