The trench coat is a timeless classic whose origin is unknown to many people. Did you know that it was a garment designed for soldiers in the First World War? Soldiers who, until then, wore long, heavy woollen coats, which were impractical in cold and rainy northern Europe as they would get soaked and muddy in the trench. As an alternative, the trench coat was born. As with our made-to-measure shirts, in the case of the gabardine we can make a completely personalised one. camisas hechas a medida

British brands Burberry and Aquascutum created a more suitable option as they were lighter, shorter and waterproof. The features of this new garment incorporated extra fabric at the top of the back to prevent water from soaking through the coat, buckles hanging from the belts allowed maps and other accessories to be hung from them, epaulettes displayed the official rank, the lapel buttoned up to the chest for added protection and on which they could rest their rifles for firing, the colour was perfect for inconspicuousness, it was fastened at the waist and a pleat was incorporated at the back to allow them to move more easily in battle.

To make the coats waterproof, at the time the fabric was treated with waxes or coated with rubber, making it heavier and more uncomfortable to wear and not breathable. However, the great innovation of the trench coat was to make it out of a much lighter, more breathable, resistant and totally waterproof cotton fabric invented by Thomas Burberry. He achieved this by waterproofing the yarn he used to weave the fabric, which he then used to make the trench coat.

A MUST-HAVE IN THE CINEMA

The films produced in the golden age of Hollywood also influenced the popularisation of the trench coat, as it was a very common garment for detective or gangster characters. It was also a staple garment for top actors. Humphrey Bogart wore it in a film as emblematic as Casablanca and Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain, making these garments popular with the general public.
